Six things to support your body for conception and Pregnancy

Check Thyroid Function

TSH - Thyroid stimulating hormone. A TSH greater than 2.5MIU/L has been associated with reduced fertilisation and pregnancy rates, as well as a higher risk of miscarriage.

Looking at TSH and Thyroid function whilst supporting conception and prior to pregnancy is crucial

Also looking at autoimmunity if suspected, and supporting this appropriately (such as Hashimoto’s, Grave’s).

Natural support for thyroid health can include: Iodine, selenium, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin A (always test and work with your health practitioner before supplementing).

Medication may sometimes be required (eg. Thyroxine) to achieve optimal levels.

Check Iron studies & Check Vitamin D levels

Both Iron and vitamin D requirements increase during Pregnancy & Postpartum

A deficiency in iron may manifest as many symptoms such as:

Tiredness and fatigue, poor focus, insomnia, feeling cold, lighter or heavier periods, increased bruising, shortness of breath, low mood and increased anxiety

Vitamin D deficiency can manifest as:

Frequent infections and lowered immunity, fatigue and muscle weakness, aches and pains, lower mood

Vitamin D is an important steroid hormone that comes from cholesterol

Both iron and vitamin D affect progesterone levels, by regulating ovulation and ovarian function

Reduce Alcohol intake

What do the statistics say:

A progressive deterioration in semen quality is linked to increased alcohol intake

Alcohol use by both men and women during IVF is associated with a reduction in live birthrate

Increased alcohol consumption is negatively associated with pregnancy rates for IVF and ICSI treatments (84g or more per week)

For men, alcohol is negatively associated with live birthrates during IVF/ ICSI (84g or more per week)

Omega 3 fatty acids - EPA / DHA

  • is found to reduce inflammation within the body. It is found in oily fish, such as, Salmon, Trout, Sardines

  • great for neurological support

  • a 2019 COCHRANE review found that increasing intake of omega 3 supports pregnancy related outcomes

  • increasing Omega 3 levels can increase pregnancy rates and live birth rates during IVF, IUI and ICSI

Regular Acupuncture

  • regulate the menstrual cycle
